The MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) women's swimming and diving team has received a verbal commitment from Julia Gonik.  She will suit up for the Engineers in the Fall of 2018.

Gonik is a senior at Northwood High School, where she is a breast and IM specialist.  She placed 10th in the 100 breast (1:04.86), and 12th in the 200 IM (2:06.83) at the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships last May.  She also contributed to Northwood's 11th-place 200 medley relay (30.20 breast let), and 14th-place 400 free relay (54.30).

Gonik holds an individual record at Northwood High School in the 100 breast (1:04.71), and participated in both the 200 medley (1:48.79) and 400 free (3:33.23) records.

Julia Gonik - NHS Roster Profile

Swimming year-round for Irvine Novaquatics, Gonik extends her breaststroke range out to the 200, and competes in free and back as well.  She had an outstanding long course season this summer at the 2017 PC SCSC Futures Championships earning best times in the LCM 100 breast and 200 IM.  At the 2017 CA / Nevada Speedo Sectionals in Yucaipa, CA., Gonik finished in the 200 IM (2:10.96) C-Finals, and 100 Breast (1:06.83) C-Finals..

The MIT Engineers were a powerhouse program in the NCAA's Division III-last season, their women's swim team placed 5th at the NCAA D3 Championships.  Gonik's best times in the 100 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM would've landed her in the A final for each of these events at the 2017 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championships (NEWMAC).  In the 100 back, she would've also made the B final at the NEWMAC Championships venue.

Gonik will be enrolled at MIT as an engineering student pursuing a major in electrical engineering and computer science.

Here's a look at hER best times:

Event SCY LCM
100 Breast 1:04.71 1:15.94
200 IM 2:06.83 2:30.01
200 Breast 2:22.17 2:46.20

“I am ecstatic to be part of MIT's Class of 2022!  The world-class academics and excellent swim and dive program make MIT the perfect place for me to continue my career as a student-athlete.  I know that I will be able to excel both in the classroom and the pool with MIT's outstanding coaching staff, collaborative team environment, and endless opportunities for innovation.  I can't wait to spend the next four years as an Engineer!"

Some impressive college commitments coming from this high school. MIT, Cornell University, Columbia University...

Think of all those Nobel Prize laureate professors who will be teaching these student-athletes.
