Georgia Institute of Technology has received a verbal commitment from another high-level Northwood High School recruit in Gabriel Munoz for the class of 2022.

A two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and three-time NISCA All-American, Munoz brings elite level IM speed that contributed to Northwood's 3rd place team finish at the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships by placing 6th in the 200 IM, 10th in the 100 back, and swimming in the 2nd-place 200 medley relay and 4th-place 400 free relay.

Munoz's improvements over his high school career have been record breaking as he etched his name in Northwood's record books for the 200 IM (1:49.63), 100 back (50.17), and participated in both the 200 medley (1:32.51) and 400 free (3:04.04) relay records.  Munoz is anticipating next high school season to be on track to make even larger strides.

Munoz's lifetime bests puts him just outside of scoring range for Georgia Tech's Head Coach Courtney Shealy-Hart at the 2017 ACC Men's Swimming Championships in multiple events, meaning a solid freshman season could have him contributing right out of the gate to Georgia Tech, which hopes to improve on its 6th-place finish at last year's ACC's.

Munoz should help improve Georgia Tech's IM crew, provide depth on relays, and help the Yellow Jackets compete in a tough men's ACC.

This summer Munoz had an outstanding long course season with the year-round club Irvine Novaquatics, garnering lifetime bests in the 100/200 free, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM at the CA SCS/NOVA JAG in June, landing him in the A finals multiple times.

Munoz will be enrolled at Georgia Institute of Technology as an engineering student pursuing a major in either Mechanical, Aerospace or Industrial Engineering.

Here's a look at his best times:

Event SCY LCM
200 IM 1:49.86 2:10.63
100 Fly 49.83 56.34
200 Fly 1:49.42 2:04.93
100 Free 47.02 53.30
200 Free 1:40.25 1:55.48
100 Back 50.17 1:02.44

“I am beyond excited to share my verbal commitment to the Georgia Institute of Technology to be a student-athlete.  The environment presented by Georgia Tech of outstanding swimming, the best engineering programs in the nation, and beautiful facilities made me realize this would be the best step towards my success.  I feel extremely privileged to be part of the Georgia Tech family, and I would like to thank those who have supported me in this journey."
Go Yellow Jackets!!!” - Gabriel Munoz
