NORTHWOOD TOPS FOUNTAIN VALLEY AND L.B. WILSON IN TRIANGULAR

The Northwood High School swim team boys and girls swam away with victories yesterday against Fountain Valley & L.B. Wilson.   


The Northwood High School swim team squared off in a triangular meet on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, with the Timberwolves taking non-league victories over both Fountain Valley and Long Beach Wilson High Schools at the Northwood Aquatic Center on Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

The Timberwolves boys defeated the Barons by a score of 97-69, and triumph over the Bruins 101-69.  The overall boys team posted 14 first-place finishes, and 32 overall top-3 finishes in 64 events.  The Lady T-wolves recorded a 90-78 victory against the Lady Barons and a 110-60 over the Lady Bruins. The overall girls team posted 11 first-place finishes and 25 overall top-3 finishes.

 

200 FREE

Northwood JV Girls got off to a good start, winning the opening individual event, the 200 free, in a time of 2:17.20 from Hannah Roushdy.  Roushdy was well ahead of the rest of the field, as L.B. Wilson's Sammy Sheldon finished 2nd in 2:21.35, and Fountain Valley's Crystal Banh was third in 2:23.98.  The Varsity Lady T-wolves were led to their 2nd overall top finish by senior distance freestyler Katya Burjakowsky claiming the 200 free in a time of 2:03.73, with Fountain Valley going 2-3 for the runner-up spots from Cassie Koger (2:04.73), and Sara Tran (2:05.98).  The Timberwolves scored a 1-2 punch with Mack Nesbit winning in 1:47.25, and teammate Shayan Shaikh (1:53.53) finishing second.  L.B. Wilson's Brett Kalynycz rounded third place in 1:54.76.

100 IM

Northwood Open Girls Yalda Assemi pulled in a third place showing in the 100 IM touching in a time of 1:22.33.  The Open Boys posted a top time in the 100 IM with Ethan Abravanel winning in 1:09.27.

200 IM

JV Girls Hannah Mcllrath dominated the 200 IM for Northwood surging to the top time with a 2:35.64. Fountain Valley's Samantha Bui held onto second with a 2:36.98, while L.B. Wilson's Clair Pachter clocked third in 2:38.63.  On the JV Boys side Northwood put in a 2-3 finish with David Chang touching second in 2:19.46, and Arthur Liu claiming third in 2:20.79.  Fountain Valley secured the win with Jake Brown in 2:17.38.  For the Varsity Girls at the first wall, it's Northwood's Julia Gonik out in 29.48.  Second is her teammate Olivia Chen at 30.60 and third Fountain Valley's Kaitlyn Chiu (30.90).  Coming in before the breast leg is Gonik in 1:03.24 with Chu second and Chen third.  With the breaststroke leg to sort the field, Gonik still holds onto first with a 37.84 breast split, but Chu loses momentum with her breaststroke of 40.83, while Chen third.  Coming into the final wall, it's Gonik in 2:13.40 with Chu second on the fastest free leg (31.90) to land a 2:19.22.  Third is Olivia Chen in a 2:24.67.  In the Varsity Boys race at the 50 it's Northwood's Gabe Munoz out in 25.04 with Fountain Valley's Anthony Pham second 27.05, and L.B. Wilson's Jake Zuanich third 28.19 in lane 6.  Munoz is in lane 5 holding his lead 55.10 at the 100 with Pham turning in lane 5 58.85. Zuanich gains ground on Pham with a faster breaststroke split 37.58 to 39.98, but coming home it's Munoz taking the victory easily in a 1:58.39.  Second goes to Pham in 2:07.25 with Zuanich third with a 2:10.09.

50 Free

Northwood Open Girl's Linh Huyn flew through the 50 free, going 30.41 to easily outpace her rivals from L.B. Wilson (Rylie Gulielmotti, 30.96) and Fountain Valley's (Madison Le, 31.93).  The JV Boys 50 free was a similar blowout producing a 1-3 result with freshman Tae In Gu blasting out a 24.71 tying L.B. Wilson's Keaton Fort (24.71) for the top spot.  Timberwolves junior Alex Ra took third in 24.73.  The Lady T-wolves got a second place win by way of freshman Amanda Hsieh in 25.42.  L.B. Wilson's Mia Tedesco managed to hold the lead for the whole 50 free in 24.38.  Fountain Valley's Kennedy Hood closed for third in 26.16.  In the Varsity Boys sophomore Hwa Min Sim (22.35) hit the wall first in for the victory in the 50 free.  Fountain Valley's Adam Mancini picked up a second place finish of 23.24, while L.B. Wilson's Max Berg rounded third in 23.54.

50 Fly

Northwood Open boys acquired a second place finish from Sriteja Sadam who swam a 30.46.  L.B. Wilson's Mehras Amirahmadi won the event in 28.96, while Fountain Valley's Spencer booth rounded third in 30.54.

 

100 Fly

Northwood JV Girls Hannah Mcllrath came back off her 200 IM win to swim the 100 fly taking it out hard with a 34.20 on the first 50, then to the wall with her double meet win of 1:10.80.  Mcllrath was followed by Fountain Valley's Trang Troung (1:11.21), and L.B. Wilson's M. Quezada (1:11.35).  The Varsity Girls 100 fly saw freshman Josephine Manuel scoring second place points with her time of 1:01.65. Fountain Valley's Hannah Farrow clocked the top event time in 58.83, while her teammate Kaitlyn Chu touched in for third in 1:06.51.  In the Varsity Boys race, Timberwolves sophomore Gabriel Munoz ran away with things in the 100 fly, winning by 2.51 seconds in 52.92.  Kyle Reilly (55.43) took second for Fountain Valley, while his teammate Brandon Bees rounded third in 57.68.

 

100 Free

Timberwolves JV Boys freshman Sean Gao pocketed a third place showing in the 100 free touching in at 55.74.  Fountain Valley's Alex Huynh had the top time of 55.02 with L.B. Wilson's Keaton Fort picking up second, posting a 55.04.  Senior Cameron Hsieh swept the 100 free stopping the clock in 48.12.  L.B. Wilson's Max Berg grabbed second with a time of 50.39, while Fountain Valley's Adam Mancini placed third in 51.63.

500 Free

The 500 free Open Girls race came down to two swimmers jockeying for first, with Northwood's Hannah Roushdy leading the way to hit the wall first in a 6:12.41.  L.B. Wilson's Emily Paz clocked in for second in 6:13.75, while her teammate M. Garcia-Cortez claimed third in 6:28.81.  On the Open Boys side, Michael Lee earned a third place with a time of 5:33.88.  Varsity Girls Hannah Farrow from Fountain Valley, and Northwood's Katya Burjakowsky met in the middle in this race.  Farrow at the 200 pace clocked a 2:06.80 next to Burjakowsky's 2:06.94.  The two matched each other stroke for stroke, but Farrow pulled ahead at the 400 turn winning the event in 5:18.53.  Burjakowsky swam a great reace scoring second with 5:24.21.  Her teammate Zoe Baick touched third in 5:40.91.  Varsity junior Mack Nesbit wasted no time in this race, getting out very quick over the field at the 200 in 1:53.37, and finishing up at 4:51.87.  L.B. Wilson's Brett Kalynycz (5:08.05), and Daniel Schmidt (5:13.22) posted a 2-3 placing.

50 Back

Meanwhile, Northwood junior Sanghoon Oh picked up a third place finish of his own for the Open Boys with a 33.91.

100 Back

Northwood's Shannon Lee blew away the field, winning the 100 Back for the JV Girls with her time of 1:09.70. She touched just ahead of Fountain Valley's Jamie Tran who finished second at 1:10.59 and teammate Kirsten Wong with a 1:12.04.  Timberwolves junior Luke Balding touched the wall first with a 1:04.70, locking up the top time for the JV Boys.  Not far behind was Fountain Valley's Andrew Quang (1:05.45) and Vihn Nguyen (1:05.52) earning second and third.  The Lady T-wolves freshman duo Amanda Hsieh and Lauren Hitchens absolutely brought the heat, and appeared destined to score points in the Varsity Girls 100 Back.  Hsieh came up way ahead of the rest of the field and stormed to the turn at 30.36 leaving Hitchens splitting 32.43, but Fountain Valley's Cassie Koger appeared in the hunt managing to make up plenty of room on the back half hitting the wall for second in 1:03.26.  Lauren Hitchens rounded the top three in 1:05.64.  On the Varsity Boys side, senior Nick Thorson and Fountain Valley's Anthony Pham were locked in a battle to the first wall 28.83 to 28.63, but Thorson distanced himself just enough on the back half touching first in 57.71.  Pham was second in 57.93, while L.B. Wilson's Jack Berg grabbed third in 59.07.

50 Breast

The third place individual win in the Open Girls 50 breast came from Northwood's Tara Esfahani who swam a 39.83, improving her best time by 1.45 seconds.  For the Open Boys Brian Fu sealed a second with 34.92, over teammate Jinwoo Park 35.38 staking Northwood with a 2-3 placing.  Fountain Valley's Ly Nguyen took the event in 33.11.

100 Breast

L. B. Wilson's C. Pacheter and Northwood's Amanda Nguyen went head to head in a solid even split race as Pacheter took first with 1:20.17, while Nguyen was just shy of first place with a 1:20.59.  L.B. Wilson's Lori Acuna took third in 1:23.61.  The JV Varsity Boys race for first was intense with Fountain Valley's Alex Huynh and Northwood's Conner Budka producing a tight stroke for stroke race to the wire only .01 hundreds separating the two as Huynh touched first in 1:08.63 in front of Budka's 1:08.64.  Leon Shi took third for Northwood with a 1:09.67.  After coming away with a big win in the 200 IM Northwood's Varsity sophomore Julia Gonik doubled in the 100 breast winning 1:09.04.  Gonik cleared more than two body lengths between herself and the second place finisher from Fountain Valley Lauren Wong (1:12.08).  Teammate Jenna Morley moved into third with 1:13.65.  Northwood's Varsity sophomore Henry Wu topped the 100 breast with 1:01.41, but Fountain Valley's Kyle Reilly almost ran him down but fell short with his second place time of 1:01.76.  L.B. Wilson's Alan Peoples finished third in 1:03.28.
