TIMBERWOLVES RISE ABOVE; WINS AGAINST MISSION VIEJO & SAN CLEMENTE IN TRIAGULAR

The Northwood Timberwolves secured a perfect two-for-two tri meet sweep taking on Mission Viejo and San Clemente high schools hosted at the Northwood Aquatic Center on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.  The Timberwolves defeated the Diablos 107-63 on the boy's side, while the Lady T-wolves won 160-129.  The girls also won 113-56 against the Lady Tritons, while the boys triumphed 107-63.

The Timberwolves exerted their relay dominance by sweeping the top spots in total team boys and girls relays with six each.

"I was really happy with the performance of our girls, and I think it indicates that we have a successful season ahead of us," said Asst. Coach Cameron Nelson. "I would also like to give a shout out to our Freshman girls who have done a great job of stepping up, and contributing to our varsity team." said Nelson.


200 FREE

Northwood Open Girls grabbed the first top win of the afternoon with Tara Esfahani's 2:48.28 200 free. There was some space between the top three as San Clemente's Sophia Snyder was second at 2:51.47 and Mission Viejo's Hannah Sarikcioglu was third, 2:52.24.  JV Girls Hannah Roushdy followed lead notching another event win for Northwood.  Roushdy won the event in 2:16.33, just four seconds ahead of San Clemente's Isabella Anderson (2:20.46).  Mission Viejo's Lane Bargabus rounded third in 2:25.32.  The JV Boys went 1-2 with junior Michael Lee (1:59.64) and freshman Nick Huynh (2:03.40).  Outside those two, the field was very tight, as the next three were not even separated by a full second.  San Clemente's Carson William finished third, 2:04.35.  Needing the varsity points for the team battle, Katya Burjakowsky turned up big in the 200 free.  Burjakowsky won the event in 2:03.04.  Mission Viejo's Jacqueline Setlich touched second in 2:04.53, while San Clemente's Marissa Echelberger rounded third in 2:09.95.  Northwood Varsity Boys got some big points as junior Mack Nesbit (1:46.51) and Shayan Shaikh (1:50.55) went 1-2 in the event. Shaikh and Mission Viejo's Shawn Archbold (1:50.99) battled it out all the way to end for second, but Shaikh got the edge in the final 100 yards splitting 57.55 to 57.69. 

100 IM

Ethan Abravanel lead the field in the 100 IM for the Northwood Open Boys at 1:09.36.  San Clemente's Nathaniel Bunce is second with a 1:10.36, while his counterpart Justin Speakman sits third in 1:13.11.

200 IM

Northwood's JV Girls lead a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM.  Hannah Mcllrath went out really fast in the fly, clearing a half body length lead into the backstroke.  Amanda Nguyen gained quickly on her backstroke splitting 39.50 over the field pulling in front, then Sobyn Chung turned in the fastest breaststroke time in 45.31.  At the touch in a very tight race, it was Nguyen at 2:37.31.  Chung was just behind her at 2:37.39.  Mcllrath finished third at 2:37.60.  On the JV Boys side, Northwood finished two inside the top 3, with Sean Gao taking the event in 2:16.62, and his teammate David Chang going 2:21.52 for second.  Mission Viejo's Nick Dang-Tran was 2:24.35 for third.  Sophomore Julie Gonik was 2:13.52 for the top time in the Varsity Girls, off her best of 2:08.93 from last year's CIF Championships but enough for the win this afternoon over teammate Nancy Zhu (2:14.85).  Mission Viejo's Hanna Erickson rounded the three in 2:16.97.  Northwood's Gabe Munoz pulled in second in the Varsity Boys 200 IM clocking 1:56.23.  Mission Viejo's Min Zhi Chua got in ahead of Munoz in a tight race with 1:55.74, while San Clemente's Brad Prolo went 1:56.42 for third.

50 Free

Make it a 2 for 3 for the Lady T-wolves Open 50 free.  Freshman Linh Huynh went 30.93 to win by 1.8 seconds over San Clemente's Rachael Maddux (32.73).  Sophomore Amina Tawfik picked up third in 33.65. Open Boys Jay Kim put in a good race for the top spot this afternoon, touching in a 25.62, while Nathan Ree grabbed the second spot in a time of 28.52.  San Clemente's Cade Mills added a third place finish in 28.74. Leading the way for the JV Girls 50 free Alejandro Aramayo who won with a time of 29.70.  In the tight battle behind Aramayo was San Clemente's Makena Duty going out in a 29.89.  Mission Viejo's Jimena Londono closed for third in 29.99.  JV Boys Tae In Gu and Alex Ra went 1-2 going 23.86 to 24.63 in the event.  Mission Viejo's Cole Hamel stopped the clock for third in 24.79.  The Northwood Varsity Girls ripped in another win with Amanda Hsieh giving the Timberwolves the victory.  Hsieh dominated the 50 free with a 25.38, nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.  Mission Viejo's Alana Archbold took second in 27.42, while her teammate Kassie Smiggs touched in for third at 27.46.  The Varsity Boys put two in the top three with Cameron Hsieh taking first 22.54, and Ethan Lan (23.28) combining to add more points for Northwood.  San Clemente's Boston Williams in for third 23.49.

50 Fly

Open Boys Sriteja Sadam got his first individual victory in the 50 fly touching in at 29.71, separated by Mission Viejo's Kaden Parks and Elijah Lauer as runners up 30.08 to 31.45.

100 Fly

The JV Girls led the charge with Ashley Tung and Hannah Mcllrath giving the Lady T-wolves a 2-3 victory. Tung took second in 1:14.80 with Mcllrath just behind at 1:15.28 for third.  San Clemente's Marin Hulse won the event in 1:14.20.  On the boys side it was a triple, Thomas Kim (59.53), Parker Mallough (1:04.07), and Esteban Torres (1:04.59) showed their top-end talent for the JV team.  Varsity Girls Josephine Manuel smashed her only individual race of the day going 1:01.01 to win the 100 fly.  Jacquelin Chen joined her earning third with 1:04.51, while second went to San Clemente's Lauren Amigleo in at 1:01.56 for second. Varsity sophomore Hwa Min Sim swept the 100 fly charting a time of 53.34 for the win, while Mission Viejo's Joey Sabers placed second 54.88, and his teammate Garrett Grounds pulled in a second place win 59.27.

100 Free

Northwood Open Girls Cindy Lee held a pretty respectable lead right down to the final 50, and too the win in the 100 free by 5.06 seconds.  Mission Viejo's Gabriella San Jose rolled in at 1:14.69, also from Mission Katie Fitzpatrick rounding third with 1:14.70.  Open Boys Andrew Wraith pulled in a third place showing touching in at 1:02.51.  On the JV Girls side, Alejandro Aramayo swam a very close race placing second in 1:06.35 against San Clemente's Alison Echelberger who set a time of 1:06.03 for the win.  Her teammate Hayden Koemer was third in 1:07.24.  Nick Huynh checked in with a third place time for the JV Boys in 55.88. Mission Viejo's Jacob Perisho took first in 55.21, while San Clemente's Reilly Pfeiffer stretched to touch in 55.46 for second.  Varsity Girls Amanda Hsieh dominated the 100 free surging to the top time of the afternoon with a 54.00.  San Clemente's Madison Gamette held onto second with a 58.62, while Mission Viejo Kassie Smiggs clocked third in 58.89.  Gabe Munoz lead a strong Northwood Varsity Boys team in the 100 free with a winning time of 49.43.  Teammate Shayan Shaikh was also under 52 seconds this afternoon with a time of 51.15.  Mission Viejo's Shaw Archbold turned in a second place with 50.11.

500 Free

In the JV Girls competition, Mission Viejo's Lane Bargabus lead the field at 6:37.02.  Junior Wen Whei Chen is second for Northwood going a season best with a 6:37.53, while Mission's Camile Underwood sits third in 6:41.78.  Thomas Kim dropped a 5:35.67 to lead the JV Boys field in the 500 free.  Kim was followed by Mission Viejo's Nick Deloney (5:40.52) for second, with his temmate Cameron Vincent (5:41.44) for third.  Varsity senior Katya Burjakowsky was third with 5:22.23, closing .30 hundreds behind than Mission Viejo's Hanna Erickson 5:21.92 but not finding the early speed to match San Clemente's Savannah DuPuis with the top time of 5:06.78.  Varsity Junior Matt Nesbit was pushed early by Mission Viejo's Min Zhi Chua who led 1:54.05 to 1:54.66 at the 200-turn, but Chua made big moves at the 400 and eventually touched in with 4:46.13.  Nesbit charged towards second 4:55.52, while San Clemente's Dorian Johnson rounded the top three with a time of 5:12.12.

50 Back

Making some contributions for the Northwood Open Girls Danny Garcia Llauno finished a solid third with 40.44.  Mission Viejo's Nicle Aranda took the early lead, at about the halfway mark posting the top time of 38.27, while her teammate Jessica Denlinger took second in 39.85.  The Northwood Open Boys mirrored a third place with Andrew Wraith clocking 34.38, despite giving a great shot of almost out touching San Clemente's Jack Goudchaux (34.08).  Mission Viejo's Austyn Osowski surged to the wall for first in 33.77. 

100 Back

Northwood JV Girls, simply put, won this event along with second to the strength of a ton of depth.  They won first in 9 total events out of 11 with nine of them coming in as individual victories at this meet.  Freshman Katrina Loye and sophomore Hayley Pham pulled in a 1-2 winning for the Lady T-wolves going 1:10.01 to 1:11.58 over San Clemente's Nicole Lewis (1:16.08).  Timberwolves JV Boys picked up three more wins for a triple in the 100 back.  Sean Gao (1:03.63), Justin Pyne (1:04.29), and David Chang (1:05.95) all had a big margin victory over the other two teams.  Varsity sophomore Nancy Zhu who won second in the 200 IM returned for a first place in the 100 back (1:03.78).  Mission Viejo's Kailey Banayat put up a second with 1:04.84, while San Clemente's Lauren Amigleo just behind for third in 1:05.86.  Varsity senior Cameron Hsieh doubled with his previous win in the 50 free, clocked a 57.45 to win the event 3.10 seconds ahead of San Clemente's Jayson Burress (1:00.55).  Mission Viejo's Gavin Hollis registered third in 1:00.58.

50 Breast

The Open Girls once again put two in the top three with Ayse Oztekin (39.37) taking first, and Margaret Wang (40.65) combining for Northwood.  Mission Viejo's Emily Klein rounded third with 43.10.  The Open Boys led the charge with Jinwoo Park and Kavi Mathur giving the Timberwolves a 1-2 victory.  Park dominated the 50 breast with a 34.19, nearly a second ahead of the rest of the field, while Mathur took second (35.23) in front of Mission Viejo's Daniel Hobiera (36.94).

100 Breast

Northwood JV Girls freshman Sobyn Chung dominated the 100 breast surging to the top time of the afternoon with a 1:21.99.  Another freshman teammate Amanda Nguyen held onto second with a 1:22.00, while Mission Viejo's Rebecca Soo touched third in 1:23.00.  Behind the strength of two sophomores the Northwood JV Boys had another run of 1-2 success in Arthur Liu (1:09.42) and Leon Shi (1:09.93) both out touching Mission Viejo's Robert Boelts (1:12.58).  The Varsity Girls 100 breast race was a nail-biter with Julia Gonik turning .34 hundreds behind San Clemente's Savannah DuPuis at the half way point, but it was Gonik who had the better second half finishing in a time of 1:09.15.  DuPuis finished second in a time of 1:09.76, and Northwood's Jenna Morley with 1:13.82 rounding third (1:13.82).  Henry Wu picked up second place points for Northwood's Varsity Boys with his time of 1:01.20.  San Clemente's Brad Prolo posted the fastest time with 57.87, while San Clemente's James Gamette stopped the clock for third in 1:04.84.
