2015 PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: NORTHWOOD BOYS WIN 3RD; GIRLS PLACE 5TH

Overall the Northwood Timberwolves finished the Pacific Coast League Championship meet by winning titles in two individual events (all levels), including two relay titles (all levels). The Timberwolves will have 33 participates swimming individual and relay events at the 2015 CIF-SS Division I Swimming & Diving Championships being held next week at the Riverside Aquatics Complex on the campus of Riverside Community College.

"What I love about this year's team is that we had contributions from just about everyone," said Northwood coach Alex Nieto. "We knew it would be a tough fight today with a lot of great teams here and we battled through it, but very pleased on this season, looking forward to CIF next week, and the 2016 season.

Northwood Timberwolves Varsity Girls finished in 5th with 269 points, while the Varsity Boys placed 3rd with 352 points.

200 FREE

Northwood JV Girls Maika Beatrice Marin opened up a top three placement for the Lady T-Wolves in the 200 free with second (2:33.04) bettering her prelims seed of 2:34.11.  She doubled with a third in the 100 fly; her 1:07.19 was a tight race with Irvine's Nicole Tom (1:08.82) who touched for second.  Daniel Bae contributed a third place for the JV Boys in the 200 free (1:55.38).  University's Benjamin Gomez (1:52.47) led the qualifiers for finals, and Corona del Mar's Davis Wong was second in 1:54.87.

500 Free

Lady T-Wolves freshman Ashley Lee was the JV Girls 500 free champion, clocking a 5:57.58 to win by 1.6 seconds over Irvine's Emma Hank (5:59.18), and Corona del Mar's Jolie Sevigny (6:03.93).

100 Back

Northwood junior Kiana Allen was third to the wall in the JV Girls 100 back (1:11.91).  Just ahead of her Irvine's Nicole Tom (1:06.77) and Samantha Nguyen (1:10.97) went first and second, respectively.  In the JV Boys 100 back event, the battle for second place was exciting with Northwood freshman Kyle Pendleton (1:01.18) holding off University's Derick Chang (1:01.37).  Corona del Mar's Henry Wilde won the event in 58.75.

100 IM

Northwood Open Boys freshman Arthur Liu posted the third fastest 100 IM time in 1:04.99 behind second place Brad Nunamaker of University (1:03.41), and first place Corona del Mar's Trenton Spruce (1:04.71).

50 Free

Freshman Collin Press went 22.89 topping the JV Boys 50 free, with teammate junior Ryan Lee going 23.11 for third.  In between was Corona del Mar's Liam Mickelsen earning second (23.07).  Northwood Varsity senior Peter Zhu blasted a 21.33 for second place in the 50 free.  University's William Hofstadter won the event in 20.85, while Beckman's Justin Le rounded third in 21.72.

100 Breast

The Varsity Boys 100 breast was a fight from start to finish, as the top three leading swimmers traded stroke for stroke with Northwood's Billy Monjay taking it out quickly at the 50 mark (26.85), but University's Judd Howard came back in 26.94 to Monjay's 30.17 which made most of the difference for second place.  Corona del Mar's Tyler Lin bettered all splits with the win in 55.65.

I have no doubts, that next season will be even better. My husband mentioned it too. Strong freshman class of varsity and jv swimmers on this team with a lot of talent. Great job to the entire team!!
